1/25/18: Smith is a sweetheart.  Big for a Chihuahua mix at 12 pounds.  But it is a great size for a small dog because he is small but you don't feel like he's so breakable. He is a very affectionate dog and loves to lay by your side, under a blanket, or on the couch so he is a great companion on those cold nights. He enjoys being petted and loves to chew bones.  Smith just had a dental, so he has sparkly white teeth and fresh breath!

Smith has a beautiful gray coat color (blue).  He does have a short coat, though, and gets cold very easily.  This made pottying outside a challenge during those frigid days.  Smith is getting better about peeing outside but has had accidents with pooping in the house.  He doesn't have a signal to go outside so I need to make sure I bring him out regularly and give him time in order to do his business.  Sometimes he doesn't go, but if I bring him out 10 minutes later, then he will.  Smith gets along with my 3 dogs - a 5 pound Chihuahua and two 90 pound Bernese mountain dogs, but he isn't drawn to them and he could have doggy siblings or not, and wouldn't care either way. He hasn't been around cats or kids while I've had him.  He is a very submissive dog, and does piddle when he gets nervous, so you need to go slow with certain things.

He is warming up to me and being in my house.  When I come home from work, he gets so excited and will bark and bark.  I also kennel him when I'm at work and during bedtime.  He does not love being in a kennel and will whine and bark.  He is getting better though, and having a bed in his kennel has helped. I tried to keep him in a playpen so he had more room, but he figured out quickly how to climb out of it. Because he can be loud, I wouldn't recommend him for apartment living.  He would also probably do better with older, considerate children or a no-children household since he gets nervous.

Smith has been a pretty gentle and relaxed house guest so far.  He has sparks of excitement, though, and I think he'll get more lively once he's comfortable in his new home.  He does great with car rides and loves to look out the window.
